\u201cUn 1500 metros, un 5000 o un 10 000 son muy duros, pero el marat\u00f3n es \u00e9pico\u201d, me dijo mi coach<\/em> al final de uno de mis \u00faltimos entrenamientos previo a esta carrera que llevo dos a\u00f1os esperando volver a correr: el marat\u00f3n de Par\u00eds.<\/p>\n

Y s\u00ed que lo es. Lo \u00e9pico tiene que ver con la poes\u00eda heroica, con lo grandioso y extraordinario, con las gestas, las haza\u00f1as, lo glorioso y hasta lo sobrenatural.<\/p>\n

Un marat\u00f3n es un recorrido heroico, es la vida resumida en 42.195 kil\u00f3metros, una odisea y un viaje \u00e9pico como los que refiere el mit\u00f3logo estadounidense Joseph Campbell, donde los protagonistas de toda historia legendaria \u2014real o hollywoodense\u2014, deben atravesar invariablemente por escenarios comunes que a continuaci\u00f3n resumo, mismos que sin duda identifico en mi camino al Arco del Triunfo, no como un h\u00e9roe, sino simplemente como un humano con un objetivo, que a veces puede ser mucho m\u00e1s conmovedor.<\/p>\n

1. El mundo ordinario:<\/em> si bien me gusta correr desde ni\u00f1o, luego de casarme pas\u00e9 a\u00f1os sin ponerme tenis, viendo televisi\u00f3n y fumando.<\/p>\n

2. La llamada de la aventura:<\/em> tras a\u00f1os de matrimonio sedentario, mi esposa un d\u00eda me dijo que ten\u00eda que hacer algo con mis s\u00e1bados y domingos, y me regal\u00f3 unos tenis.<\/p>\n

3. Rechazo de la llamada:<\/em> los avent\u00e9 al fondo del cl\u00f3set y los dej\u00e9 ah\u00ed varios meses, cada que los ve\u00eda me apesadumbraban.<\/p>\n

4. La ayuda sobrenatural:<\/em> tras varios reproches de mi mujer, una ma\u00f1ana decid\u00ed calzarme esos zapatos y correr aunque fuera un instante para darle gusto. A los cinco minutos me detuve exhausto y un corredor de unos 70 a\u00f1os me dijo: \u201cCorrer te cambia la vida\u201d.<\/p>\n

5. Cruce del primer umbral:<\/em> a la ma\u00f1ana siguiente volv\u00ed a salir y as\u00ed hasta que recuper\u00e9 el gusto, abandon\u00e9 el cigarro y compet\u00ed en una carrera de mi oficina en la que, sorprendentemente, qued\u00e9 segundo.<\/p>\n

6. El camino de las pruebas:<\/em> rebasar aquella meta me llev\u00f3 a otras. Acab\u00e9 mi primer marat\u00f3n CDMX en 4:24:59, el siguiente en 3:33:03 y despu\u00e9s me inscrib\u00ed al marat\u00f3n de Par\u00eds 2017.<\/p>\n

7. Odisea y caverna profunda:<\/em> durante el entrenamiento acab\u00e9 en una ambulancia, me romp\u00ed un disco de la columna. El doctor me prohibi\u00f3 correr de nuevo. Llor\u00e9 como nunca. Fui a Par\u00eds, lo intent\u00e9 y no pude. Abandon\u00e9<\/a> y pas\u00e9 un a\u00f1o sin hacer casi nada y hace seis meses volv\u00ed a comprar un n\u00famero dorsal y un boleto de avi\u00f3n a la ciudad de las luces. He entrenado como nunca, voy dos veces por semana a fisioterapia y volver\u00e9 a intentarlo.<\/p>\n

8. Recompensa, regreso a casa y transformaci\u00f3n:<\/em> he regresado a Par\u00eds, esta historia continuar\u00e1 y conf\u00edo en que ser\u00e1 de la mejor manera. El 14 de abril corro por segunda vez el marat\u00f3n y, s\u00ed, esta vez ser\u00e1 completo.
